Featured picture candidates Featured picture candidates are images that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured pictures. The picture of the day images are selected from featured pictures. Old candidates for featured pictures are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured pictures: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and current month. Formal thingsNominatingGuidelines for nominatorsPlease read the complete guidelines before nominating. This is a summary of what to look for when submitting and reviewing FP candidates:
Artworks, illustrations, and historical documentsThere are many different types of non-photographic media, including engravings, watercolors, paintings, etchings, and various others. Hence, it is difficult to set hard-and-fast guidelines. However, generally speaking, works can be divided into three types: Those that can be scanned, those that must be photographed, and those specifically created to illustrate a subject. Works that must be photographed include most paintings, sculptures, works too delicate or too unique to allow them to be put on a scanner, and so on. For these, the requirements for photography, below, may be mostly followed; however, it should be noted that photographs which cut off part of the original painting are generally not considered featurable. Works that may be scanned include most works created by processes that allow for mass distribution − for instance, illustrations published with novels. For these, it is generally accepted that a certain amount of extra manipulation is permissible to remove flaws inherent to one copy of the work, since the particular copy – of which hundreds, or even thousands of copies also exist – is not so important as the work itself. Works created to serve a purpose include diagrams, scientific illustrations, and demonstrations of contemporary artistic styles. For these, the main requirement is that they serve their purpose well. Provided the reproduction is of high quality, an artwork generally only needs one of the following four things to be featurable:
Digital restorations must also be well documented. An unedited version of the image should be uploaded locally, when possible, and cross-linked from the file description page. Edit notes should be specified in detail, such as "Rotated and cropped. Dirt, scratches, and stains removed. Histogram adjusted and colors balanced." PhotographsOn the technical side, we have focus, exposure, composition, movement control and depth of field.
On the graphic elements we have shape, volume, color, texture, perspective, balance, proportion, noise, etc.
You will maximise the chances of your nominations succeeding if you read the complete guidelines before nominating. Video and audioPlease nominate videos, sounds, music, etc. at Commons:Featured media candidates. Set nominationsIf a group of images are thematically connected in a direct and obvious way, they can be nominated together as a set. A set should fall under one of the following types:
Adding a new nominationIf you believe that you have found or created an image that could be considered valuable, with appropriate name, quality, image description, categories and licensing, then do the following. Step 1: copy the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Your image filename.jpg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button. All single files: For renominations, simply add /2 after the filename. For example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Foo.jpg/2
All set nomination pages should begin "Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/", e.g. "Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/My Nomination".
Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:
Nominations are time-sensitive and for one-time use only. An automatic clock starts as soon as they are created. Do not create them in advance, save them for later or re-activate them. Galleries and FP categories: Please add a gallery page and section heading from the list at Commons FP galleries. Write the code as Page name#Section heading. For example: Optional: if you are not the creator of the image, please notify them using
An 'Alternative' is created by adding a sub-section to the nomination page: ====Alternative==== VotingEditors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 50 constructive, stable edits on Commons (excluding user and talk pages) can vote. Everybody can vote for their own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed. You may use the following templates:
You may indicate that the image has no chance of success with the template {{FPX|reason - ~~~~}}, where reason explains why the image is clearly unacceptable as a FP. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator. A well-written review helps participants (photographers, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a picture. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above. Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:
Remember also to put your signature (~~~~). Featured picture delisting candidatesOver time, featured picture standards change. It may be decided that for some pictures which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing an image which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured picture. For these, vote:
This can also be used for cases in which a previous version of an image was promoted to FP, but a newer version of the image has been made and is believed to be superior to the old version, e.g. a newly edited version of a photo or a new scan of a historical image. In particular, it is not intended for replacing older photos of a particular subject with newer photos of the same subject, or in any other case where the current FP and the proposed replacement are essentially different images. For these nominations, vote:
If you believe that some picture no longer meets the criteria for FP, you can nominate it for delisting, copying the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box: In the new delisting nomination page just created you should include:
After that, you have to manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list. As a courtesy, leave an informative note on the talk page(s) of the original creator, uploader(s), and nominator with a link to the delisting candidate. {{subst:FPC-notice-removal}} can be used for this purpose. Featured picture candidate policyGeneral rules
Featuring and delisting rulesA candidate will become a featured picture in compliance with following conditions:
The delisting rules are the same as those for FPs, with voting taking place over the same time period. The rule of the 5th day is applied to delisting candidates that have received no votes to delist, other than that of the proposer, by day 5. The FPCBot handles the vote counting and closing in most cases, current exceptions are candidates containing multiple versions of the image as well as FPXed and withdrawn nominations. Any experienced user may close the requests not handled by the bot. For instructions on how to close nominations, see Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished. Also note that there is a manual review stage between when the bot has counted the votes and before the nomination is finally closed by the bot; this manual review can be done by any user familiar with the voting rules. Above all, be politePlease don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care. Happy judging… and remember… all rules can be broken. See also

Weak oppose I think this would have been an FP if nominated in 2008, but now it's too small to be overwhelmingly impressive. It's still beautiful, though, ergo weak oppose. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:53, 19 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment I would also be interested in the technology used to capture what appears to be a single image with such a dynamic range and low noise in 2008. The image was uploaded in 2020, when we did not yet have such good AI tools as we do today to optimise post-processing. Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 05:04, 19 December 2025 (UTC)

Support I agree that this is a beautiful place, and this is certainly a nice photo of it. I didn't know some 30,000 people were murdered by the Nazis there - sadly, compared to the death toll of the most famous Nazi killing centers, 30,000 people is a small number. Unusual ripply clouds on the right of a type I can't remember having seen before. Do you know what that type of clouds is called? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:05, 19 December 2025 (UTC)
Weak support Since the photo was taken shortly after midday, the lighting is unfortunately not very dynamic. But the composition is good and the post-processing is much better than in comparable photos. Comment Very beautiful colors, but perspective distortion here Юрий Д.К. 21:27, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with reviewer Yuri D.K., and the photo also appears to be strongly oversaturated. -- Radomianin (talk) 21:53, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment We already have several FPs of Nasir ol-Molk. I don't find the perspective distortion disqualifying at all, but I take Radomianin's point about oversaturation. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:12, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
Support There is no oversaturation. Perspective is looked at with an artistic and beautiful view. In addition, it well demonstrates the value of symmetry in Persian architecture.--Ταπυροι (گپ) 05:40, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- I agree that the image is visually compelling; my concern is purely technical. In several color ranges - especially greens, cyans and magentas - the saturation appears elevated beyond a neutral photographic baseline, to a degree where fine tonal differentiation starts to diminish. Based on visual analysis, this looks like a oversaturation, roughly in the range of 20-30%, rather than a purely natural light response. -- Radomianin (talk) 07:07, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

Info Dead camel thorn tree in Deadvlei, Namibia. The trees in Deadvlei grew approximately 900 years ago when periodic flooding of the Tsauchab River created a fertile marsh, but they died between 600 and 700 years ago after encroaching sand dunes obstructed the water flow. Due to the extreme aridity and lack of moisture in the Namib Desert, the wood has not decomposed; instead, the remains have been preserved and blackened by centuries of intense solar radiation.

Info Desert-adapted elephant dust bathing in Damaraland, Namibia. Desert-adapted elephants often dust-bathe by spraying sand or dust over their bodies with their trunks. This behavior helps protect their skin from intense sun and heat, acts as a natural insect repellent, and creates a protective layer that reduces moisture loss in the harsh desert environment. Desert-adapted elephants are the same species than African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) but have behavior and physical adaptations for life in extreme desert environments. They are generally slimmer and slightly smaller than typical bush elephants and weighing toward the lower end of the species’ range due to limited food availability. Although African bush elephants can live 60–70 years in the wild, desert-living populations often have shorter average lifespans (40-50 years) because of the harsh conditions they live in.

Support Minimalism in its most beautiful form: The long exposure captures the raw energy of the sea in a soft, almost abstract representation. The reduced color palette and the flowing lines create a calm and timeless aesthetic. -- Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 06:57, 16 December 2025 (UTC)

Weak support The subject is good, the simple composition works and the quality is fine, but the glossy skin of the courgette as a result of the harsh light gives strong impression that the vegetable is artificial. Still, it should be featured. --Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 22:27, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment In my opinion, the composition and the shadow on the top right make it unstable. I think it would be better if you rotated it 90 degrees clockwise like this, and then cropped the right side to fit the left side a little. --Laitche (talk) 00:57, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Poco a poco, provided you have the 12 year old RAWs, do you think it's worth reworking? JayCubby (talk) 02:26, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Agree In my opinion, the picture looks much better rotated as suggested. – Julian Lupyan (talk) 04:01, 17 December 2025 (UTC)- I'll be honest, I prefer it as it is. I think rotating it makes the composition look more conventional, which isn't to its benefit. Cmao20 (talk) 17:21, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- I have the RAW file but not with me as I'm traveling now. I believe than a new export witout any changes of the file settings would help Poco a poco (talk) 23:25, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Poco a poco: Would you like me to create an alternative from the JPEG? When that's featured, you can overwrite it. --Laitche (talk) 03:27, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

Info Created, uploaded, and nominated by Julian Lupyan – Julian Lupyan (talk) 19:34, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
Info I nominated this image because I feel it is quite unusual, considering that the subject is unconventional and rarely photographed (there are no FPs of a carillon drum), which may be due to the fact that they are usually placed in very dark spaces. I'm aware that the composition isn't outstanding, however there is not much to work with because these mechanisms are usually in empty windowless rooms. Considering these circumstances, I'm hoping that my portrayal of this strange and beautiful instrument is done well enough to be featured. – Julian Lupyan (talk) 19:34, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

Comment Do you have a portrait one? The bottom crop is so tight that I personally would have opposed even for QI, let alone a FP. --C messier (talk) 20:22, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I do not. The bottom fastenings reached almost all the way to the position I was in, and my focal length was fully widened (the bottom is not cropped). I prioritized the strings on the top over the metal fastenings on the bottom. – Julian Lupyan (talk) 20:34, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

Info Marksburg Castle in winter, with the striking chimneys of the Braubach lead and silver smelter, one of the oldest industrial monuments in the Middle Rhine region, to the right. Created by Rolf Kranz – uploaded by Rolf Kranz – nominated by Zquid -- Zquid (talk) 20:55, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
Support Another try... :-) -- Zquid (talk) 20:55, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
Oppose I find the photo very interesting. There are two things worth mentioning: the beauty of the surroundings and the contrast between the two buildings present (for that reason alone, the wov factor is guaranteed for me): the castle and the smoking chimneys. The drawback of the image has to do with its production or processing: it is a huge photo, but the details of the roofs, among other things, prevent it from being FP, in my opinion. --Lmbuga (talk) 01:54, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
Support Even better technical quality, and still a magnificent motif.--Paracel63 (talk) 10:42, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
Support FP for me Юрий Д.К. 12:03, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
Oppose New, but strong CA here on antenas on left side and between trees. Castle is not similar quality than on the pic bellow. I did expect more from Pana FF, but maybe 1/160s on 185mm, ISO 100 wasnt good setting, in handheld for sure. At least i would solve CA. Anoted. --Mile (talk) 16:58, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
Oppose Sorry, it is a very bad quality. Very unsharp details while oversharpened all. And the chimneys ruin all. -- -donald- (talk) 05:37, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Mile: This is a snapshot, not a planned shot. On that dreary winter day, I was just out and about, taking photos of my dog in the freshly fallen snow for purely personal reasons. Suddenly, the sun came out for a few minutes. At the same time, smoke was billowing from the three chimneys, which rarely happens and never lasts long. I had to act spontaneously, without being able to adjust the exposure time, aperture, ISO, etc. to the changed circumstances. The huge success at WLM, which was completely unexpected for me, is due to the motif and the unique interplay of these factors. I am very pleased with the success and have always refrained from nominating my snapshot for the featured pictures. Others can decide whether the photo belongs in this gallery.
- @Rolf Kranz kudos for your place, but sometime its harder to met FP because some look more carefully and not by thumbs. You didnt put few minutes here to remove CA on antenas. That is reason to oppose too. You have "Auto setting" on camera as well, if in time trouble. Also i would suggest to remove naming "Original file" becuse it isnt original, but edited. Compo is very good, weather too, but editing and quality not so much. --Mile (talk) 11:07, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- @-donald-: You claim that "the chimneys ruin all“. Why are you disavowing the WLM jury? They awarded the image composition first prize nationally and second prize internationally (out of around 250,000 photos) – not despite, but precisely because of the contrast between the castle and the industrial chimneys. A little more restraint wouldn't hurt.--Rolf Kranz (talk) 21:08, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
Weak support It is obviously not 'very bad quality', that is silly, in fact it is a very good contribution to the project. But I am not sure whether it rises to the level of FP because I don't think it's actually sharp. It looks like a touch of camera shake, and although you have tried to mask this with sharpening, it's not possible to cover it up altogether. I would oppose but the image is very high resolution and if I downsize to 50%, in which case the image is still 9.6 megapixels, it looks fully sharp to me. I would support the 9.6 megapixel picture if it had been nominated (though I'd probably have commented it was on the small side for a static subject), because the composition, colours, subject, and mood are all very good. So opposing this version would just be punishing you for uploading a full resolution file and I'm not a pixel peeper. Cmao20 (talk) 23:34, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
Weak support per your argument. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:09, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
Support I initially was going to !vote oppose, but Cmao has a very good point. (An ISO of 320 or so would have been better). JayCubby (talk) 02:49, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
Support Even if the post-processing is not optimal, the image certainly deserves first prize due to its unusual subject matter and is, in my opinion, undoubtedly worthy of an FP.--Ermell (talk) 07:00, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
Support --Tournasol7 (talk) 12:15, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
Neutral for now A unique motif: two monuments from different eras captured at the same time, rightly recognized by the WLM jury. Pinging @Rolf Kranz: there are some technical imperfections in this snapshot, but they could be improved through raw development in Camera Raw (PS 26.11). I would be glad to attempt a new development if you could kindly provide the raw file via email or a private link. Of course, this is only a collegial offer to help - if you prefer not to, that is completely fine. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 21:25, 16 December 2025 (UTC)- @Cmao20: A clever solution! The flaws are hardly noticeable anymore, while the character and mood remain completely unchanged. I have now implemented your version.--Rolf Kranz (talk) 15:35, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment The different color scheme of the depths takes away much of the subtle drama from the original image. I also preferred the cropping of the original image. --Ermell (talk) 16:38, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

- It isn't cut out. As far as I remember it was already after sunset, when I took this picture, and I used a flash.
- I think the time in the metadata is off by one hour. I probably forgot to change the time in my camera due to daylight saving time. File:20220726 Naturschutzgebiet Südliche Fröttmaninger Heide.jpg from the same walk was taken a shortly after sunset. This picture was taken 17 minutes earlier than the one with the aphids. So this checks out.
- So I should probably correct the time by adding one hour on each pic of this day, right? FlocciNivis (talk) 21:13, 17 December 2025 (UTC)

Oppose A tiny bit uncentered doesn't bother me, but I echo Heylenny's concerns about poor photo editing technique. The picture looks fine in thumb but at full size there are odd details - the very blurry central area inside the arches surrounded by sharp detail; the oddly distorted figures of the people in the distance, which are often a hallmark of AI editing tools that inaccurately try to reproduce shapes and textures; additionally the uneven transition between building and sky, with some jagged edges and other areas blurry. Closing nominations manually
The following description explains how to close nominations manually. Normally this is not necessary, as FPCBot takes care of counting the votes, closing and archiving the nominations. When the Bot has counted the votes, a user needs to check and approve the result; everything else is done by the Bot. Therefore, the following instructions are normally only needed for delist-and-replace nominations that the Bot cannot (yet) process, and in case the Bot malfunctions. The closing can be done by any experienced user. If you need help, just ask on the FPC talk page.

{{FPpromotedCreator|File:XXXXX.jpg}}to the talk page of the creator, if the author is a different Commons user than nominator and uploader.
- As the last step (whether the image is featured or not; including {{FPX}}-d, {{FPD}}-d and {{Withdraw}}-n nominations), you have to move the transclusion (the {{ }} and the text within those) of the nomination to the current log page.
- To find the current log page, visit the first page of the log for this month. If the header of that page contains a link with the text “Next part of this month”, the log for this month has been split into several parts because it contains too many entries. Click on the “Next part …” link and repeat this until you reach a page where the header does not offer a “Next part …” link; that’s the last and current log page.
- Now open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you are closing. It will be of the form:
{{Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:XXXXX.jpg}}or:{{Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/XXXXX}}. - Copy that line to the bottom of the current log page and save that page. Then remove the same line from the candidate list and save that page.
Closing a delisting nomination
- On Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line):{{FPC-delist-results-reviewed|delist=x|keep=x|neutral=x|delisted=yes/no|sig=~~~~}}
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Ensifera ensifera (22271195865).jpg) - Edit the title of the delisting nomination and add
delistedornot delistedafter the image title; for example:=== [[:File:XXXXX.jpg]] ===
becomes=== [[:File:XXXXX.jpg]], delisted === - Move the transclusion of the nomination to the current log page; please see above for an explanation how to find the current log page and how to move the nomination to it.
- If the outcome was not delisted, stop here. If it is delisted:
- Remove the picture from Commons:Featured pictures, list and any subpages.
- Edit the picture's description as follows:
- In the {{Assessments}} template on the image description page, change
featured=1tofeatured=2(do not remove the {{Assessments}} template; do not change anything related to its status in other featured picture processes). If the image description page uses the old {{Featured picture}} template, replace it with{{Assessments|featured=2}}. - Remove the image from all categories beginning with "Featured [pictures]" (example: Featured night photography, Featured pictures from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, Featured pictures of Paris); but not from categories about featured pictures on specific Wikipedia editions, like Category:Featured pictures on Wikipedia, English.
- Remove the "Commons quality assessment" claim (P6731) "Wikimedia Commons featured picture" (Q63348049) from the picture's Structured data.
- In the {{Assessments}} template on the image description page, change
- Add a delisting-comment to the original entry in the chronological archive of featured pictures in bold-face, e. g. delisted 2007-07-19 (1–6) with (1–6) meaning 1 keep and 6 delist votes (change as appropriate). The picture must not be removed from the chronological archives.
- If this is a Delist and Replace, the delisting and promotion must both be done manually. To do the promotion, follow the steps in the section above. Note that the assessment tag on the file page and the promotion tag on the nominator's talk page won't pick up the /replace subpage that these nominations use.
Archiving a withdrawn nomination
If a nomination has been withdrawn by the nominator by using {{Withdraw}} or is cancelled with {{FPX}} or {{FPD}}, wait 24 hours after the nomination was last edited. If there has been no objection to the cancellation within this time, the nomination can simply be archived. Just move the transclusion of the nomination to the current log page; please see above for an explanation how to find the current log page and how to move the nomination to it.
