Uploading figures produced by a scientific collaboration

[edit]

To whom it may concern.

I am a professional astronomer working at ESO, member of the steering committee of the the Lunar Gravitational Wave Antenna (LGWA) and coordinator of the communication and outreach activities of this project. The Collaboration is putting together a draft for a Wikipedia entry for LGWA. In this process we will need to upload a number of figures produced by the collaboration itself. Could you please advise me on the best way of specifying the information related to the licence? More specifically, if I upload the figures myself, should I indicate that I have created them? Or should instead the actual person that created the figures upload them? Of course it would be more practical for us to be treated as a collaboration rather than having single individuals uploading the required media.

Thanks a lot for your help,

Nando Nando Patat (talk) 14:37, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Nando Patat: Hi, If you want to upload works not under a free license and not created by you, you will need to verify your account via COM:VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). Or if the figures are already published somewhere under a free license, you could just upload them mentioning the source, and add a {{Licensereview}} template. Thanks for your future contributions, Yann (talk) 15:19, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Nando Patat: These aren't exactly third-party uploads, but probably much of the information at COM:THIRD will be relevant. I suggest you read that and come back here with more specific questions if that does not answer you to your satisfaction. - Jmabel ! talk 23:32, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, it sounds like you are doing work on en-wiki that could fall under en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPY and almost certainly falls under en:WP:COI. The latter is very important for you to read if you are in any way being paid for this work. At the very least, there are disclosures you need to make on en-wiki or you are likely to have your account there blocked. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @Jmabel,
I have read and understood https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:COI and will act accordingly. In any case I am not being paid for this. Several of the figures will be taken from the mission white paper, which was published in the open Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (JCAP), 2025. JCAP articles are CC BY 4.0 by default. For the other figures I am contacting the owners, asking to upload them under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence. That should address the matter. But, please, let me know, should I be missing something. Nando Patat (talk) 16:04, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Nando Patat: only further issue is that for anyone uploading previously published work, even their own work, if they upload anything where they can't cite a source that carries a clearly legitimate CC BY-SA 4.0 licence (including, if the website in question is under their control, adding one there ex post facto), then they should go through the COM:VRT process for those files. Otherwise, someone is likely to doubt whether the account that uploaded is legitimately the same person. I know it sounds petty to someone obviously legitimate, but we've had many false claims in similar cases, so we had to establish that policy. - Jmabel ! talk 21:37, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JmabelThanks a lot for your help and advice. The white paper was published on JCAP. There is an explicit note on the journal's website stating that the paper is "Published by IOP Publishing Ltd on behalf of Sissa Medialab. Original content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Any further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the title of the work, journal citation and DOI." This can be checked at this link: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1475-7516/2025/01/108 (bottom of the page). We would then use something like this for the figures: "This figure is taken from Ajith et al. (2025), JCAP. The article is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0)."
Of course, the site is not under our control, as this is an international, open access refereed journal. Does this address the issue? Nando Patat (talk) 08:53, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Nando Patat: yes. If the work is online on that basis, anyone can upload content, indicate that as source, and use that license. No need for the uploader to have any particular relation to who created the content. Do remember to use the "attribution" parameter of {{CC-BY 4.0}} so that reusers will get the attribution right. - Jmabel ! talk 21:38, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot. Will do. Nando Patat (talk) 08:47, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Images enhanced using AI?

[edit]

Hey,

I just want to know, Say I take a picture of an animal using my phone and I am not happy with the quality, and I use AI engine to enhance the quality without changing anything on the original image, is that still considered as AI generated image? Esethu Mayekiso (talk) 18:17, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Esethu Mayekiso: This is currently an area of controversy, where I don't think matters are well settled. Here's my take; only the second point is firmly policy:
  • Does Commons already have a fair number of similar images that are not AI-enhanced? If so, just skip it, it won't add much to what we have.
  • If you upload, you absolutely must include {{Retouched}} or another similar template acknowledging the AI-based retouching. You should also use either Category:Photos modified by AI or one of its subcategories.
  • I strongly recommend that you first upload your original image, and then overwrite it with the AI-enhanced image using "Upload a new version of this file", which you should find on the file page under the File history. That lets others see what was really there in the documentary photo and what was AI enhancement. - Jmabel ! talk 23:54, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, that was helpful Esethu Mayekiso (talk) 08:07, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

A photographer is using creative commons to entrap users

[edit]

A photographer who posts their work prominently on Wikimedia is using Creative Commons to use those who use images for non-commercial purposes. Their entrapment is so prolific that several advice pages can be found online about how to respond. How can Wikimedia allow such entrapment to occur using its pages? ~2025-39002-43 (talk) 19:14, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@~126;2025-39002-43: This is terribly vague, since you neither mention the user nor point to any of these "several advice pages". We have occasionally limited or banned users for overly harsh enforcement of licenses. However, if the issue is that people are reusing their photos without acknowledging the author that is copyright infringement pure and simple, and certainly within any photographer's right to enforce. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
"This is terribly vague"
What a nasty way to respond to someone trying to do right thing. ~2025-39002-43 (talk) 11:15, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not at all. You still did not mention the account which you are accusing. This page is observed by administrators and other patrolling users, who might take appropriate measures. But that requires that the suspicion of inacceptable behaviour is specified and evidence is provided. --Túrelio (talk) 11:33, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
It is a nasty way to respond, the points you make are valid, but irrelevant to this. ~2025-39002-43 (talk) 13:08, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
We do have a policy on this: Commons:Copyleft trolling. MKFI (talk) 07:41, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for this, this is a very useful resource. I'm unable to see on this, not on the user's profile page, where or how to report them for copyleft trolling, might you be able to point me in the right direction? ~2025-39002-43 (talk) 11:27, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
You've got to step forth and name the alleged trapper. Without substantial evidence, your messages here are currently red herrings, currently not giving any reasons to act upon them. You should also name those "several advice pages". Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 11:41, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks. I'm currently seeking legal advice and so will hold back for now. ~2025-39002-43 (talk) 13:07, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, just to note that not all active enforcement of Creative Commons terms constitutes copyleft trolling. When a licensee uses an image with no attribution at all, particularly in a commercial context, that is typically viewed as straightforward infringement rather than any form of entrapment; while not everyone would actively encourage such enforcement, the majority can at least understand or tolerate it as a normal consequence of licence misuse. Copyleft trolling generally refers to cases where the licensor intentionally makes the terms difficult to follow or uses obscure requirements to manufacture violations, or pursues users over small technical issues (for example minor typos in attribution), and does so indiscriminately against anyone regardless of context (personal use, commercial reuse by companies, etc.). Given that you prefer not to identify the photographer and have mentioned seeking legal advice, it is difficult for others here to assess whether this is a case of problematic behaviour or simply a matter of standard copyright enforcement. At this point, I have some doubts that your sole purpose here is to "warn us". --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 02:13, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Possible violations of Commons:Copyleft trolling can be reported at COM:AN/U. Please be prepared that this might lead to longer debates depending on the circumstances. However, we cannot act as long no such case has been opened. Usually, we are not aware when a copyright holder seeks remedies of license violations except through such reports. --AFBorchert (talk) 00:10, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

That poster (or teaser poster since the official one didn't come out just yet) was from from the official account from the series creator. I admit, I didn't own the picture, nor the official poster of the series, but since noone didn't put the picture on that page, I had to do it, maam/sir.

Can somebody explain what to do with this? NahuelFanboy2004 (talk) 13:06, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@NahuelFanboy2004 Assuming this is about the poster at Sun Chaser. If so, that pic can't be on Commons (unless some very unlikely stuff).
However, you can upload it on English Wikipedia. Go here: WP:FUW, pick Upload a non-free file > This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. > This is the official cover art of a work. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:55, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

presidents

[edit]

I was just curious about the way the site treats different Presidents. The site describing Trump was full of loaded words for the purpose of making the President look bad, while the site describing Biden use words that were neutral or leaned heavily on praising his accomplishments while downplaying his mistakes and blunders. This is NOT reporting the facts, but is heavily biased writing. You want donations - be objective not biased when covering political issues! I have allowed my students to use Wikopedia when researching for papers, but will not allow it any more when covering political issues. Please clean up the bias coverage. ~2025-39653-84 (talk) 04:00, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

uploading svg versions of chemical structures

[edit]

I like to upgrade chemical structures that are only presented in bitmap format. I draw them using chemsketch and then refine using affinity, then exporting to SVG. is it possible to upload such files to pages? Carpet marlborough (talk) 08:39, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Carpet marlborough: if I understand you correctly, yes. Assuming that by "page" you mean in Wikipedia, one doesn't upload a file to a page. One uploads a file to Commons (typically, for beginners, with Special:UploadWizard) and then editing the Wikipedia page to us that uploaded file. In my experience, the easiest way to replace an image on a Wikipedia page is to "edit source" rather than use the WYSIWYG editor, and simply substitute one filename for another. - Jmabel ! talk 21:48, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Change name of my file

[edit]

Can someone change the name of my file " File:1872 Heating-Stove.jpg " to " File: Heating-Stove 1872.jpg " because for whatever reason my file now does not work with the thumb feature. I suspect it's because the 1872 date of my file starts first in the file name. Maybe the thumb feature will work correctly if that date is at the end of the file name instead. Thanks. --California Broker (talk) 14:38, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • @California Broker: Seems to be working fine for me. It may be an issue with your browser? GMGtalk 14:47, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
No, not not browser - because I get the same result on all 3 of my PCs. This is what I got on en:User:California Broker/Sandbox 9 on a different PC from the original PC I used earlier. However, I do believe you gave me the solution and that is to use the " upright " feature. Thanks! Let's just leave it the way it is and I will use the the " upright " feature. Thanks!-California Broker (talk) 15:26, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
User:California Broker/Sandbox 9 - And this is the same of what I got here on my third PC. Strange!!! But I do believe I have the solution with the "upright" parameter. That works just fine. Let's just leave the file the way it is. Thanks again! --California Broker (talk) 15:56, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I still don't see what the problem is. It displays fine for me. GMGtalk 17:55, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I took a screenshot of what Draft 9 displays om my 3 PCs and uploaded to my Flickr account]. My stove using the "thumb" parameter is 4 times larger than using the "upright" parameter. It shows this way for all 3 of my PCs for Draft 9 on my Wikipedia User:California Broker account. It will display correctly and the way I want to use it with the "upright" parameter you had used. I can adjust the size with this and display right ot left side. Thanks for hint. I will use the "upright" parameter for picture size and it solves all my problems. However the "thumb" size seems too big for what I think it should be. Maybe I am mistaking??? Maybe it is displaying correctly! What do you think? --California Broker (talk) 21:00, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@California Broker: Oh, yeah. The thumb automatically sets the width of the image to 250px and the height is just whatever keeps the same proportions as the original. So tall/narrow images come out looking huge. Panoramas that are very wide and short come out looking tiny. It's working as intended, it's just not really made for images that have odd proportions. GMGtalk 13:22, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! You have been very helpful and have explained the technicalities well. Obviously you have a lot of experience at Wikipedia. Now I got a good handle on this.--California Broker (talk) 13:41, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

PD for being AI-generated, but it's not!

[edit]

Hiya, I just uploaded File:Wes Hildreth 2004.jpg via UploadWizard, and one of the required fields was about which AI generated the image and who prompted it. This is not an AI image, so I don't know why that was a required field. Even though I entered "not applicable", the Commons page for that image still bears multiple licensing templates for AI images, but this is not an AI image, and I uploaded it with the proper PD-USGov template.

Why did the wizard automatically add AI licensing templates to this upload, and can this be fixed?

Uploading Orphaned Works

Can I upload orphaned works? In this case, photographs/photograph albums that have no identifiable creator or owner because they are old and have been through many hands before landing up on eBay. In general, no. There are some countries where this is OK because their terms of copyright for photographs ~80 years ago were short, and began with creation of the work but, for example, unpublished works from the U.S. are protected for 120 years from creation. - Jmabel ! talk 04:54, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I found that the famous YouTuber Beluga was missing a picture on his Wikipedia page, so I intended to upload a picture of him. I went to Wikipedia and intended to send the video, but since it is not possible to upload a picture without the person's permission, it seems that the terms of sending the picture do not clearly prohibit the use of a screenshot of a YouTube video, so I decided to check the matter myself and send a question here. @Arc is Cool: It almost certainly means you should not upload it. For the MacArthur fellow images specifically, it looks like they release them under CC BY 4.0, which is good and compatible with Wikimedia Commons. However, they also try to say that the photos are for use by "media organizations" specifically, which would be an incompatible restriction. This is a bit of a sticky situation since one isn't supposed to add additional restrictions on top of a CC license, but we may have to consider their intent. There is a discussion on exactly this happening here. Perhaps others can chime in with their thoughts. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 22:24, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
And that discussion has come to the conclusion that, barring less ambiguous permission from the MacArthur Foundation, we can't use these. - Jmabel ! talk 22:02, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

how can i overwrite existing files?

[edit]

how can i overwrite existing files? I read the Commons:Overwriting existing files but I couldn't find a step by step instructions. I also posted a question using the help me template on my talk page but no one came to help. Super ninja2 (talk) 22:17, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Super ninja2. Commons generally perfers that files not be overwritten whenever possible because overwriting will authomatically replace the older version the file with the new one wherever the file is being used by other WMF projects, which might not always be desirable. Overwritting is usually only considered OK when making minor changes, but the file remains essentially the same file. What file do you want to overwrite and why? If you can provide more details, someone might be able to help you figure things out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:24, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
You can make requests at COM:OWR if you want a particular file to be overwritten, although I could also look at it here and add the template if it's only a minor change. Abzeronow (talk) 23:21, 11 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • @Fschapiniii: this is not wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons. For matters relating to that article in the English-language Wikipedia, you can post at en:Talk:F. Stuart Chapin III. You should not be directly editing the article about yourself: see en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY and en:WP:COI.
  • As for uploading a photo, yes, Commons is the place to do that, but we need the permission of the copyright-holder which, except, for selfies, will almost never be the subject of the photo. If you have a self-taken photo to upload, them just start at COM:First steps, but if it was taken by someone else you will want to read COM:THIRD, because otherwise there is close to 100% chance it will end up deleted.
  • Thanks for trying to help out, and I know it can be tricky to plunge into an unfamiliar environment and try to make changes, even if they are in an article about yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Info Box

[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to create a Wikipedia page about an actor and would like to know how to add an info box (or the little space with people's picture, name, height and age).

Thank you for your time,

Maëlyshouin. Maëlyshouin (talk) 16:09, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Maëlyshouin: you say "a Wikipedia page". Is this a question about Wikipedia (and if so in which language) or about Wikimedia Commons (the site where you are asking this)?
If this is about the English-language Wikipedia, my experience is that this is easier to do by editing source directly than with the Visual Editor. You will use en:Template:Infobox person; look at the source for almost any famous person to see how it is filled out. - Jmabel ! talk 22:12, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Badges for Users making donations

[edit]

It is common these days on many social media sites, for those making donations to have a 'Badge' graphic added alongside their username.

Perhaps a range of badges, different colors or ornation according to donation level and number of donations historically would encourage users to donate more and more regularly? Orca Boy (talk) 07:28, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Orca Boy. I believe donations are made to the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) as a whole and not to any of its individual projects per se; so, I don't think there would be anyway for Commons to really know who donated to the WMF unless the donater themselves made that information public. Individual projects aren't really in control of the donation process, at least that's my understanding of how things work; so, you'd probably need to propose your idea directly to the WMF itself. Finally, I'm a bit curious about File:Going Towards the Light 150x200.png that you uploaded to Commons. You've claimed the file as being your c:COM:Own work, but describe the file as also being "creative photography by BC Laker". Is this a photo you took yourself? Is BC Laker a person? Are you BC Laker? -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:16, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

The Upload Wizard was used, and all attributions are correct. Orca Boy (talk) 14:49, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
User accounts are not tied to donations so there is no automated way to display donation levels. Additionally I suspect this proposal would be very controversial for many of us: quite frequently people contact Wikipedia help desk requesting changes or expressing dissatisfaction and then proclaim that "they will stop donating". And the response to that is that donating doesn't give any kind of privileges and we don't care if you donate or not. The foundation isn't lacking in money. MKFI (talk) 09:21, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
  1. This is not a social media site.
  2. In terms of your (or anyone's) participation in Commons, I truly do not care whether you gave money to WMF. No, let me change that: if you want something from me as an admin, and make a point of telling me that you gave money to WMF, I will feel like you are attempting to coerce me and will tell you to seek help elsewhere. - Jmabel ! talk 20:31, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I Am Queen Mary (statue)

[edit]

The article for this statue does not include a photo of it. (en:I Am Queen Mary (statue) )

The statue was placed in public, and later damaged and taken out of public view.

I just found that I took a couple of photos while it was exhibited, shortly before it was damaged. The photo is not very high resolution (and could be reduced), and since the article is about the work I thought it would be an acceptable use, but given that it's a modern art piece from a living artist who surely holds the rights, I wanted to check first.

Would a low-resolution image of the sculpture be acceptable? Mzedp (talk) 21:53, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Mzedp: Thank you for your interest in uploading a photo of that statue! Unfortunately, Denmark does not have freedom of panorama for publicly displayed artworks, so we cannot host a photo of that statue here on Commons as the underlying statue has copyright protection. However, you can upload the photo to the English Wikipedia under their non-free content policy, which allows the English Wikipedia to host low-resolution images of copyrighted works in specific cases, such as to identify an artwork on the artwork's article. Note, the image should be no more than ~100,000 pixels total in size (width x height). Also note, you need to be autoconfirmed on the English Wikipedia in order to upload photos, so you will have to make 3 more edits (for a total of 10) before you are able to upload photos. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 00:24, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Mzedp If you want to upload on en-WP per above, go to WP:FUW and pick Upload a non-free file. Also, you don't have to bother with the size, a bot will take care of that eventually. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:37, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I wish to contact another user concerning an image they uploaded. Am I able to do this & how do I do it? Thanks in advance. Rbtohjmbro (talk) 22:09, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Rbtohjmbro: Every user has a talk page, located at "User talk:Username". Yours, for example, is at User talk:Rbtohjmbro (you can see it linked in your signature). You can leave a message on a user's talk page by clicking the "Add topic" button near the top of the talk page. Note, talk pages are public, so anyone can see your messages. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 00:12, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, if you and they have both enabled email for your accounts, then there should be an "email this user" option available when you visit their user page or user talk page. That is how to contact them more privately, if needed (though if there is no need for privacy, then almost all users prefer you use their user talk page). You have uploaded exactly two pictures here, both apparently of yourself: File:Dragon Lann.jpg and File:Dragon Lann Musical Artist.jpg. You don't seem to have any significant contributions either on Commons or any other sister project that are not about yourself. While we welcome active contributors to upload a small number of personal files for use on their user page, personal files are not otherwise welcome: this is not a social media site. Unless you make substantive contributions to Commons or to one of its sister projects, those pictures will probably be deleted.
There should be a little icon of a person at the upper right of every page you access on Commons. If you are on a PC, that should offer "Uploads" as one of the choices. On a phone or other mobile device, you have to click "Contributions" first, which will give you the choice of "Uploads". - Jmabel ! talk 19:00, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

File description discrepancy

The {{int:filedesc}} and {{int:license-header}} infomation for File:You Can't Lay Down Your Memory by Tejo Remy.jpg and the cropped version (File:You Can't Lay Down Your Memory by Tejo Remy (cropped).jpg) is nearly identical, yet the latter displays "Please edit this file's description and provide a source" notice (due to "lacking" source and author information). Any guidance on how to resolve this would be appreciated. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 12:40, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Cl3phact0: Your upload of the first file with flickypedia inserted information in the structured data (mirrored by default in the description page), but your upload of the second file with CropTool did not. Yoiu can add manually the essential information (description, date, source, author) directly in the information template in the description page. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:32, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Both files appear to contain the information already (compare original and cropped versions). I was hoping to find a less error prone method than re-entering the data manually. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 15:24, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
The manual addition of |author = and |source = information in this edit resolves the issue. Thank you, Jmabel. I've been able reproduce this result in other files too, however, if there is also an automated method for achieving this (something like User:Emijrpbot or User:BotMultichillT), I would be interested in learning how to invoke that tool as well. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 11:30, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Batch upload audio files

[edit]

Hello! I have about 6000 audio files that I want to upload to Commons. What would be the most efficient way to do that? It should also be mentioned, that the files are .wav, but they need to be converted to .ogg; also, the names of all of the audio files need to be changed. That means I need to go through them manually anyway, but it would be greatly appreciated, if anybody can advise me on how to do that efficiently. Joonas07 (talk) 15:20, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

There's a freeware (kind of en:Nagware, but not really annoying) for Windows called "Advanced renamer" (advancedrenamer.com) that could serve you well in renaming your files locally. I'm using the slightly older version 3.88, as the GUI there feels the most intuitive. Converting could be done by the en:VLC player, but there's a plethora of other software for such tasks too.
When you've finished preparing the files: the standard upload wizard supports batch uploads, but I think that you'll have to do smaller batches (with a double digit number of files only) as descriptions and categories are to be set manually. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:58, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
So how does this work exactly? I'll convert them to .ogg using VLC player, then I need to somehow rename them using Advanced renamer, do I need to know how to code or how does the renaming work? Then when I'm done, I'll upload them e.g. 99 at a time using the wizard, what does that look like process-wise?
Another issue is that of categories. While all of the files belong to the category "Estonian pronunciation" (they are pronunciation audio files), they should be sorted according to the first letter of the word, so for example the file Et-udu.ogg should be categorised as [[Category:Estonian pronunciation|U]]. Is there any way to do that without clicking through 6000 links? Joonas07 (talk) 17:35, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
The Advanced renamer is a GUI program. While it does support "coding" with en:regular expressions (RegEx), you don't need to know this to use it. There are user guides, for version 4 and for version 3. You can get a first visual impression of the interface in them.
I don't really understand your Commons:Upload Wizard question with "what does that look like process-wise?" - didn't you already contributed files? In any case, that page may provide some guidance.
About categorisation: I guess that you could do stuff with the Visual File Change (VFC) tool. It's also supporting RegEx, but that's beyond my abilities to code. But it'll certainly be helpful if your filenames can follow a strict pattern so that a simple character count would find this first letter of the word, or if a unique symbol (like a hyphen) marks that letter. Using a temporary user category (like Category:User Joonas07 WIP Estonian pronounciation) may also be helpful for automating the categorisation through VFC. I hope that other people may join in in advising you for that task (if you're using the "MarkAdmin" gadget: look for Interface Admins [denoted with an (IA) after their nick], such people are often more knowledgeable about RegEx than random Wikimedians). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:21, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have only uploaded files one at a time using the upload wizard, what I meant by that question was in what way is the process different, do I get to add the description, source, time, etc. to the files one at a time or is it possible to input one source and time which applies to all the files?
Fortunately, it's pretty straight forward to identify the first letter of the word and categorise it accordingly, I think that's doable using RegEx, but, like you, I have next to no skills in that. Could somebody with more experience run me through how would I go about doing this? Joonas07 (talk) 18:51, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Joonas07: Several possibilities here besides what Grand-Duc mentioned, but let me ask you a question before I suggest anything specific: is this from a PC (as against, for example, a tablet) and what operating system are you running? - Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
PC and Windows 10. Joonas07 (talk) 21:54, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Joonas07: If the renaming follows a pattern, then you can do it with PowerRename, part of the free Microsoft PowerTools suite. I don't use the rest of the suite much, but I use that one a lot. You'll probably do best if your step 1 is to separate out files that need to be handled differently into different folders.
As for the type conversion, ffmpeg is a free command-line utility that does this well. Pretty sure you can do it in a batch, picking up all the files that follow some pattern (originally a Unix utility, and they pretty much all do that).
Once you've done that, it's a matter of doing a mass upload. I can't say we currently have great tools for that; to the best of my knowledge Commons:Pattypan is the best choice in terms of capabilities and stability, but someone who does this sort of thing themselves may know more than I do. - 00:13, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Could you give me a step-by-step guide using everything you and Grand-Duc have mentioned so far? Joonas07 (talk) 08:44, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
No, I could not. If you want to find a mentor, I suggest approaching people who have already done similar tasks. - Jmabel ! talk 19:31, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

¡Gracias! Nicodemutti (talk) 20:26, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Nicodemutti: I can only speak for what it would look like here on Commons. It might be different on Spanish Wikipedia.
Here, if an unblock request is granted, the unblock template on the user's talk page will be replaced with a template that looks like the example on Template:Unblock granted where it says "Unblock request granted". If a request is declined, it will look like the example on Template:Unblock declined, where it says "Unblock request declined". In either case, the user's original reason for unblocking and the admin's reason for their decision will appear. You can see English-language examples of what that would look like on this old version of the Commons sandbox.
I'm sorry my Spanish isn't good enough to explain this in that language. I hope this helps. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:37, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@YorkEditorial45: Assuming you are asking about something on line some place, please provide a link. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@YorkEditorial45: Thanks for adding a link; unfortunately, though, that's a direct link to the logo itself and there's no real way to tell how whether the image has been released under a copyright license acceptable for Commons or anything else about the logo's en:provenance. Are you able to provide a different link showing where and how the logo is being used online? Without any more information to work with, this logo looks more than creative enough to be considered eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law and that means it really shouldn't be uploaded to Commons unless it can be verified that it has been released by its copyright holder, who's most likely the logo's creator/designer, that's free enough for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:50, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
It would certainly be copyrightable unless we could demonstrate that it was created entirely by AI (in which case it would be {{PD-algorithm}}. It's obviously new enough that if it can be copyrighted than it is copyrighted. We could not have it on Commons unless either we can prove that or its copyright-holder offers a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 20:57, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi again YorkEditorial45. FWIW, it looks like you're asking about the logo for en:PointCrow, right? The same logo can be found here on their YouTube channel, but there's no indication (at least not one that I can find) that PointCrow has released the logo under anything other than a standard YouTube license. Standard YouTube licenses aren't free enough (i.e., they place too many restrictions on re-use) for Commons' purposes; so, this logo shouldn't be uploaded without also providing some way of verifying PointCrow's COM:CONSENT: see COM:THIRD for more information on that. Now, having said all that, it's possible the en:wordmark greenish-yellow logo at the top of PointCrow's YouTube page could be uploaded to Commons because logos consisting of only text are typically considered to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:02, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

- Jmabel ! talk 00:33, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Perfecto, muchas gracias por la respuesta! Joaquintelchi (talk) 00:37, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Can I use PDF files on the Wiki?

Can I use PDF files on the Wiki? Takuan5414 (talk) 10:28, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Which wiki do you mean? And what do you mean by "use"? --Rosenzweig τ 10:34, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am working on the Japanese version of Wikinews, and I would like to use a PDF file as a source for an article. Takuan5414 (talk) 10:57, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Takuan5414: unless Japanese Wikinews is wildly different than any other WMF wiki I've worked on, you can cite a source regardless of the medium in which it appears: a website, a book, a newspaper, a PDF, a video (indicating at what point in the video the statement occurs), etc. But none of those involve uploading the content in question (obvious in the case of a book, but maybe less obvious for the others). - Jmabel ! talk 19:39, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. Takuan5414 (talk) 21:52, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Cover art

[edit]

Have the rules changed for uploading cover art of a book to use as the main picture of a Wikipedia article? Or am I just lost? Sharktale2000 (talk) 04:11, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Sharktale2000: No they have not, at least in no respect that I can think of. If you have a particular case in mind, could you please identify it? 04:50, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Uploads by User:Policenewstvuk1 - could an administrator review please?

[edit]

Hi, A new user has uploaded uploaded three files this morning. Two are screen shots of a mobile phone conversation. The third is a photo of two young men, which alleges that one of the individuals is a "notorious sexual offender". Could an administrator review these uploads please and, if appropriate, delete them? Thanks ~2025-41717-09 (talk) 10:23, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
